Amanusa presented a design environment of stark extremes. The site is rugged and exposed, the architecture boldly austere, yet the character of the resort is warm and urbane.

The hardscape draws on imagery from the ancient Javanese Kingdom of Majapahit. The main swimming pool, nearly 50 meters square was inspired by the balanced simplicity of an ancient royal bathing pool. Plant materials were selected for indigenous quality and their compability with the unique climate of the Jimbaran Peninsula. The design concept was to make the landscape seem like it was not consciously ‘designed’.
